A Brief History of Magic
To give a full history of Magic would take more space than I have here, but hopefully you will find this brief trip interesting.
In the Bible and manuscripts a magician known as Simon Magus was considered to be the David Copperfield of his day, and he amazed the people of his time by flying from one place in the room to another. Beyond this we can trace his art form back to the ancient Egyptians and the Chinese.
One of the oldest effects in magic is known as the Chinese linking rings, in which several solid metal rings link together then unlink. This effect is still used by many magicians of all ages today as it has become somewhat of a classic in modern times.
In the middle of the 19th century Charles Mouton opened the doors of the first entertainment theatre where people paid to get in and watch the great magic performances of their times. Meanwhile in Paris and London French magician Robert Houdin was one of the pioneers of the use of electricity and electro-magnetism in his magic performances. When he levitated his young son for the first time the audience is said to have exploded in shear amazement. Known as the father of modern magic, Robert Houdin died in 1871.
Enchanted and amazed by Robert Houdin, an Austrian card magic manipulator and close up magician named Erik Weiss changed his name and became Harry Houdini. The rest, as they say, is history.
In 1873 an English magician named John Neville Maskelyne opened a showroom in Piccadilly, London. The magic performance was so successful it played uninterrupted until 1903, at which point it moved to St George's Hall with the inclusion of a new magician; David Devant.
David later went on to become equally famous in his own right, and you can see a bronze bust of him holding a set of multiplying balls on display at the Magic Circle headquarters in London, in a room called the 'Devant room'. If you are interested in magic then you must visit this room and the Magic Circle in London - it's a great experience and one you will never forget.
Another great Magician from history was Robert Harbin, who was not only a great magician, but one of this century's creators of magical effects. He invented one of the greatest effects of all time, known as the zig-zag:
A young lady was placed in an upright box and then it was closed. At this point only her mid-section remained in the centre (sometimes she would extend her hand and wave to the audience). The original prototype of this illusion can again be viewed at the magic circle in London.
Harbin died in 1978 having performed on stage cabaret and television for many years. Many magicians consider him to be the first grand master of magic; he truly was a great magician.
